Genesis Recap

First draft of the 2010 season, the FFPC's Genesis League.  Here's what you need to know about the FFPC league: 12 teams, TEs get 1.5 points per reception (PPR), Dual Flex (so starting line-up is: 1QB, 2RBs, 2WRs, 1TE, 2FLEXs (any combo of 2 RB, WR or TEs).  QBs get 4 points for TD, all other positions 6 points and it is a PPR league.

You can follow the flow of the draft on the two charts that appear here for the first 10 rounds.  Also, since all participants agreed that the draft could be talked about live on Red vs. Blue's podcast, I have no problem revealing the draft results and teams.

I drew the 6th spot.  Not in love with that slot, mainly because it is an even number and I like odd numbers!  Actually, I am a fan of the Top 5 slots, if I can't get one of those, than I rather move to the back of the draft.  Slight surprise with the Top 5 picks with Fitz going 5th over Ray Rice.  "Recovery Boys" is a huge Fitz fan and grabbed him where he could last year, so it wasn't all that big of a surprise.  Now, it is to me and the no brainer pick is Rice, but, it's the first draft of the season, so I like to take chances early.  Last year in the same draft I think I had the 4 slot and took Andre Johnson, a reach then, but not by the time folks were drafting in August & September.  I went Miles Austin over the safe pick of Reggie Wayne.  A case could also be made for Calvin Johnson here, but I wondered about his durability.  I love Austin!  Miles Austin was ranked 6th overall last year for WRs and that included the first 4 weeks where he didn't put up many points.

"Team Thompson" gets a gift with Ray Rice, 3rd ranked RB last year in PPR leagues.  Steven Jackson went 9th overall and I have done about 6 drafts since and seen him last until the 2nd round in some.  I like SJax more this year than last and would consider him in the 2nd, however, who else is nervous about his lower back woes?

TE Dallas Clark rounds out the 1st round, which is kinda surprising, but then we have to remember TEs get 1.5 points per reception in this league.  Dallas Clark was just the tip of the iceberg in early TE selections.

Let's talk about WR DeSean Jackson selected 2.4.  Much too early for my tastes!  Sorry "Glenneration X", while I applaud you for grabbing the guy you want, I'm not sure his production will warrant that draft spot.  I said (and so did  FFF co-owner Garret Mathany) in his rookie year there was concern about him going over the middle and taking the big NFL hit.  Well, he proved us wrong his rookie campaign, but his sophomore effort, while very good (11th ranked WR) showed signs of durability issues and shying away from hits.  Hard for me to pass on the likes of Roddy White or stud TE there.

But, oh so glad he did pass on Roddy White, because he was there for me at 2.7.  I pounced!

Another stud TE in Jermichael Finley completes Round 2.  I was so hoping Finley would fall, but in all the FFPC drafts I have done since, he never lasts past the 2nd round.  In a normal PPR league, where TEs get 1 point per reception, he will last until the 3rd and possibly the 4th round.  But, here, with all these seasoned Fantasy Football vets, there was no slipping him to the 3rd round.

3rd round, love the value Sidney Rice, Greg Jennings and DeAngelo Williams represent for their owners. Some solid teams being built at the top of the draft.  I debated over 4 RBs for my 3rd round choice and went with Shonn Greene, mainly because I am a J-E-T-S fan.  And again, since it's the first draft of the season for me, I like to throw caution to the wind.  Ryan Grant and Jamaal Charles follow, two of the three I was considering.  Then we have a mild surprise in Aaron Rodgers being selected as the first QB off the board over Drew Brees.  I actually have ZERO problems with this pick and unlike "Glenneration X's" DeSean Jackson pick, I approve!  Pierre Thomas at 3.11 is super solid value.

Round 4 starts with rookie RB Jahvid Best.  I like Best, don't get me wrong and he certainly will have tons of opportunity in Detroit, but did you watch him play at Cal?  If you did, then you should be as concerned as I am about his ability to take some licks.  4.1 too early for me, especially with Chris Wells, Drew Brees, Cedric Benson, Knowshon Moreno, LeSean McCoy sitting on the board.  And who else was sitting there?  Ryan Matthews.  That would have ben the pick for me if I wanted to go upside rookie RB.  Pussy Jones goes next at 4.2...we all know that is too rich for my blood.  4 solid choices follow in the 4th round, including Drew Brees right before my pick.  Yes, I would have taken Brees.  I also thought about Ryan Matthews here, but I didn't want to get shut out of stud TEs in this format, so I went with Brent Celek. New starter Kevin Kolb will rely heavily on his TE in the beginning of the season.

Crabtree-JULES

How good is Michael Crabtree gonna be this year?  If you want him, the 4th round seems to be where you need to take him.  Given what was left on the board, I think he is a solid upside choice.  He has beast like ability.  Can Alex Smith step up and take his game and Crabtree to the next level?  I really don't know, I have to see some pre-season games before I can make that call.

Ryan Matthews at 4.12 is a grand theft!  Really, I can only blame myself (and 10 other owners!) for letting "Bada Bingers" pair Chris Johnson with Ryan Matthews.  Thankfully, "Bada Bingers" makes a small mistake IMO when he draft Mike Sims- Walker with his 5th pick.  Sims-Walker did not finish the season strong.  Jacksonville has been looking for a QB upgrade all off season and I just don't see how Sims-Walker will flourish in their offense.  He's good, don't get me wrong.  We loved him as a sleeper last year, but I'm not spending a 5th rounder on him, there are upside WRs I like a heck of a lot more than Sims-Walker!

I have no love for Matt Forte this year.  Which means at 5.2 he more than likely, is a steal.

I go Tony Romo in the 5th.  He and Phillip Rivers were best available in my book and I wanted a solid QB to plug in every week.  Bonus, I get the Romo-Austin hook-up!

Owen Daniels goes 5.7, hard for me to justify him this early.  He's coming off major knee surgery (repair a torn ACL).  This is an injury that takes most folks one year to recover from...will he be ready for the start of the season?  I say no.

I like Dwayne Bowe at 5.9, but that was before his "importing" comments.  Another rough training camp in store for Bowe.  I'm beginning to think, that while he is very talented, he is deep in Coach Haley's doghouse.  "The Real Leroy" loves himself his rookies and takes C.J. Spiller to round out the 5th.

Where do you draft WR Julian Edelman?  I haven't figured it out yet.  I doubt Wes Welker is ready to start the season, so Edelman has value.  "Chef Paul" takes him at 6.2 in this draft.  Red Vs. Blue podcast made a good point (I was listening for a little bit, but kept getting logged off....very frustrating!!!) if you drafted Edelman, why wouldn't you take Welker later.  In this draft Welker went in the 12 round to "Glennaration X".  Instead of Lance Moore in the 11th, I think Welker in the 11th or 12th would have been the pick for "Chef Paul".

I'm not spending a dime on T.J. Houshmandzadeh this year.  "Team Thompson" you overpaid at 6.6!!!

I took MBIII in the 6th.  I was well aware of the Felix Jones as lead back talk and I was also well aware that I was passing on Reggie Bush.  I think Marion Barber is capable of 10 TDs this year and that filled my need.

Hakeem Nicks goes in the 6th to "War Kittens".  So know this team has Andre Johnson, Michael Crabtree and Hakeem Nicks as his core WRs...that's sick!!  Oh, and he has Michael Turner and DeWill for his RBs.  Let's hope he starts making some mistakes!

Donald Driver goes to "The Show" in the 6th.  Very nice value.  Double D just keeps doing what he is doing the past years.  He was a Top 20 WR last year and no reason in that offense he can't repeat, despite his advanced age.

WR Mike Wallace starts the 7th round, I like and was hoping he would be there for me.  No such luck.  There goes Jeremy Maclin (dare I say he is the Philly WR to have, a full 5 rounds after DJax went).  There goes Percy Harvin to "The Show at 7.3, that's two great picks in a row by this team.  "War Kittens" grabs a Top 10 TE in Visanthe Shiancoe.  "Recovery Boys" choose RB James Harrison, who finished last season with games of 49.80, 20.80 and 22.70.  Now that some time since we have drafted has gone by, I wonder if "Recovery Boys" makes the same pick with rookie Montario Hardesty (who went in the 8th round here, by the dreaded "War Kittens", still no mistakes!) getting lots of hype.

I need a WR and best available is Robert Meacham.  The former Tennessee Vol finished the year as the 26th ranked WR in 2009.  He is hit and miss because The Saints spread the ball so much, but when he hits, it's a home run!

A lackluster finish to the 7th round, the only pick I like id "4D's" Ahamd Bradshaw, solid RB value there.

Quick 8th round observations:  I wouldn't want my QB1 to be Carson Palmer, I wouldn't mind my QB1 being Joe Flacco (it's a Cam Cameron thing), Heath Miller was a good pick for the Owen Daniels owner, Eddie Royal deserves to be utilized better from Josh McDaniels, John Carlson won't be asked to block as much and Kevin Kolb in the 8th as your QB1 is real nice.

9th round observations:  I don't want Eli Manning as my QB1 either.  Not sure why, just a gut call.  "War Kittens" finally makes a pick I don't like, Lee Evans.  Although hard to argue with Evans in the 9th, but all his QB options are horrid! Kevin Walter was so two years ago, Dexter McCluster was indeed a reach here (but I like his upside), Devin Hester is who myself and "War Kittens" should have taken, I'm still not a McFadden fan (but anyone is draftable, especially McFadden in the 9th), Caddy, well, I just don't like Tampa Bay players.

That gets you through almost 10 rounds of my first draft this season.  I will say I thought Thomas Jones was good value for me in the 10th and how does Matty Ice fall to me in the 12th round?

Draft early and draft often folks!!!!

My first of 2010!
Written by Jules

Just like last year, I will be drafting my first team in the FFPC's "Genesis League". Draft day is April 29th, that gives me about 2 weeks to prep and one week before the NFL Draft.  I drew the 6th hole, last year I had the 4 hole and went Andre Johnson.  If he is there at the six hole this year, will I pull the trigger?  Take it to the bank, I will!!!  Although, I will say with all the unrest in Steeler-land, Mendenhall is tempting.  If Big Ben gets suspended and with Holmes being traded, I think they will rely on the running game more than ever.  Fitz is a consideration (yes, I realize Warner retired, but Fitz is a BEAST), as is Reggie Wayne.

My prep begins as soon as I post this.  First order of business is to review the rules and see if there are any changes.  The FFPC is a 12 team PPR league, but TEs get 1.5 points per reception and they employ a Dual Flex (you start 2 Flex positions).  It's always important, even if you think you know them, to go over the rules.

Let 2010 begin!!!
